Peter Walker’s talents by Bettina Bonkas

We’re going to file an appeal. This moron of a judge has flatly refused our case but she’s picked the wrong person to tangle with. We’ll show them that we’re right. Damn it, such people should be dumped, they’re a disgrace for their profession. From you,” I expect a top preparation. Any questions, you come to me. I want to be informed about every single detail. So, that’s it from my part. Anything from you?”

Dr. Peter Walker had a prestigious law firm in Frankfurt. He lived for his work and it was not without reason that he was one of the best in his profession. He took defeat personally and he would take care that this judge would regret her wrong decision.

Dr. Peter Walker was an imposing presence: 6,2 feet tall with a small belly of bon vivant but otherwise lean. He was always well dressed with dark tailor-made suits, discreetly patterned shirts with a white or bright blue background, silk ties and handmade, Italian shoes. He had a deep and full voice which he specifically used in court and stressed with skillful pauses. It was for his imposing presence as well as for his professional expertise that he enjoyed wide acceptance from his team and his contemporaries. His quick comprehension and intelligence made him quickly impatient, and now too as he was looking impatiently at his team. His restlessness also had another reason: Today was Wednesday and every Wednesday evening he had an appointment with Nadine and those appointments were sacred to him.

Inwardly Peter was relieved when no questions from his team came up. He dismissed his team which left the adjacent conference room to his office. He was busy with a new case when he finally left the building at 18.25 sharp.

He steered his Porsche through the Frankfurt traffic. Another 10 minutes then he would be with Nadine. Dr. Peter Walker parked his car directly in front of her house and got changed in his car. At 7pm sharp he rang her door bell and only a few minutes later they had already got started. “Yes, you’re already very good. Try to be a bit more consistent, don’t be so tense. Yeah, that’s how it goes.”

They were sitting opposite each other in comfortable chairs. Peter was happy, his self-knitted scarf thrown loosely around his neck, in a jumpsuit knitted by Nadine. On his head he was wearing a knitted hat with flippy pompons. Both were sitting opposite each other, each concentrating on their knitting. Peter enjoyed this full concentration on the pot holders he was knitting. They felt so good in his hands and he loved the sound of the clacking needles.

Are you ready, Peter?”, Nadine stopped his train of thoughts. He anticipated what was about to come.

Both sat upright on their chairs and were still for a moment before they began at her command to knit simultaneously. Simultaneous knitting required his full attention but he loved the monotone noise of the knitting needles and soon afterwards there were only the clacking knitting needles, Nadine, the room and nothing else. The pompons of his hat bobbed in strict time and Peter felt a pleasant peace of mind.

Still with this feeling he was sitting in his Porsche when he was driving home. The radio was playing in the background. He had changed into his business outfit but inwards he was feeling more attached with his knitting. “… the police have informed that a judge was found with a big knitting needle in her forehead. For the knitters out there, it was 7mm needle. Luckily the judge survived the attack but has suffered significant brain damage. It appears it is more of a case of if rather than when she will return to the courtroom. So, now to the traffic news. …“

Peter switched off the radio. Terrible, when people were forced to take such drastic measures. He was glad that they only dealt with business cases in his law firm.

Live your dreams, no matter how weird they seem to be, be yourself and make time to do what you really want to do – make time for self care. Just make sure that other people don’t suffer;-).
